GOB'Z'HEROES - Skulls Mini

You dont know the GOB'Z'HEROES kickstarter yet? Well check this link, everything happens there!

My friend from SkullsMini behind the project was cool enough to give me some little gob's from the campain. I also had the opportunity to test the beta version of the game some time ago and i loved it. The rules are easy to understand, the games are fast & fun, the abilities & spells are hilarious... it was enough for me! So i decided to take some lead and to already paint three little fighters.

They are small and easy to build (most of them are in a single piece) so the prepping work went very fast! Just a few mould lines to sand, only two little air bubbles to fill over the three minis and it was done. Considering they will be painted for the game and to add a little personal challenge, i wanted to not spend more than 5 hours of painting on each one. I also and obviously did put them on gaming bases. Here they are :

In the end, only the mutant and the zombie needed some more time (maybe 6 or 7 hours to finish) as they have a lot of skin and im always slow to paint this stuff... I think sometimes it's a good exercise to force yourself being fast and not to go too much into details. It also creates good and purely relaxing painting sessions, only thinking about having fun ;).

I hope you like them and be sure more will come in the future! Cheers!

Some works to come...

Well...today is a good day to show you some works which are going to occupy me these next times. I currently have number of miniatures i need to achieve...but...sometimes there is proposal which I cannot refuse. Ok..it isn't very reasonable for somebody who has just a little time for painting...but well...here we go!

The first one is a new character produced by Blacksmith Miniatures, a funny 54mm's goblin sulpted by Valentin Zak. This commission, the seventh for this company, promises a lot of pleasure and a real challenge to make something of well. The work is already well moved forward...a fast paintjob which aims at the efficiency. It is nice to play with strong contrasts of colors. This one should be ended quickly.

The second one is something different of what I'm doing usually...and a new project which I am delighted to begin! It's also a goblin...but much bigger. This one tried to ride a pig...you understood...it's the new realization of Leben Models sculpted bye Lucas Pina Penichet, a very talented sculptor. I received it at home on november 13th which is a special day for pigs in the region from which I come from. Thanks to Benoit for this nice gift...this collaboration on your range is a good opportunity to test some paint tricks on a buste...a big scale which I am not used to paint!

Some pictures to show you the sculpt ... and the incredible painting work done by Benoit...difficult to come later...but I look forward to! More pictures here on his website!

And my own one...ready to be prime...

In it will come to be added things to be finished...a dwarf started last year during our class with Martin in Lyon, a small 32mm Achille sculpted by Steve party for Maow Miniatures contest "dress a johnny", a Smart Max Miniatures for an exchange ( non...je n'ai pas oublié notre petit échange Yannick...je me suis juste perdu en route...mais ça devrais venir...pour cette année normalement! )...and probably the beginning of a new sculpture. I wish you all an happy new year...hope 2016 will be a good year for all of us...health and painting above all!

Viking sculpt...complete

Today I am very happy to show you my last accomplished project. It is a special project for me because it is my first completed sculpture. In the past I had never succeeded in completing a miniature too many defects, things which did not please me...and tries which went directly in the trash can. This time it was different. Since the beginning I motivated to finish it...without thinking of the mistakes...just try to do my best. I reached my goal in my opinion. The figurine is not ideal, many things will be to improve on my next realizations...but it'ss a good base to build, to continue to learn sculpting. With this man, I wanted to make something realistic, to work the anatomy and the organization of the folds of clothes which I find essential in a sculpture. I learnt a lot. To learn to sculpt is a difficult way for me and many things will be to apply from the next one ...but when I see what can realize the real sculptors, I really want to try!

Scandinavian Warrior - 54mm - Fimo and Milliput.

Since these pictures, i worked more on hands which were not accomplished. it will be probably casted if some of you are interested. Thanks to all of you who encouraged me and gave invaluable advice during the realisation of this character. i hope you'll like it!

Cheers

AUTUMN with Patrick Masson

Hello everyone,

Today i will speak about a very special project we have achieved with my friend Patrick Masson. It is an original idea from him, that he has in mind since a long time. It's a poetic scene, far away from the barbarians or monsters we are used to see in our little world. After the MSS 2014 and driving our way back home, Patrick explained me his idea and asked if i would like to paint it... I felt really honoured because he is such a great sculptor and i always loved his works. I couldnt say no :) .

So the basic idea is an autumn thema based piece, with a little girl dancing in the leaves, creating a whirlwind that reveals a spirit. The final result looks very simple, but the work involved behind was very complicated. Patrick will explain the sculpting process himself (probably on Facebook), so here i just show you the finished green.

To be honest, when Patrick gave me this i was scared. So many leaves on a pretty big base and the spirit is sooooo delicate. I wasnt even sure it was paintable without destroying it. That made two major difficulties: how not to break it and how to make it easily readable to the eye.

First and fortunately, the spirit and the girl were removable from the base so i could paint them separetely. Both Patrick and i agreed the girl had to be the focal point of the scene, it's quite obvious. As during autumn the leaves turn to browns, reds or yellows, i decided to dress her in turquoise. I love those "simple" contrasts of complementary colors. As i said before the scene isnt complicated, it's basically a little girl and a lot of leaves. That's also why i decided to stay sober in the color choices. I thought it would help to achieve a readable result.

Chronologically i started painting the focal point, the girl. I first gave her some basic colors with the airbrush (on the jacket, skirt & face), before working with the brush. It's not the kind of piece you can paint a lot of freehands on and anyways it wouldnt have added anything to the final result (in my opinion). The only minimal freehand was on the beetle boots that Patrick wanted :) . Here are some WIP's, sadly i didnt photograph more steps with my phone :

Time to start painting the base, i mean the leaves. Some of them had to stay in the shadow when others had to pop out. So i mainly focused on the ones that create the whirlwind around the girl. The leaves on the ground will remain dark, as if they already started to break down into the soil. The watchers have to see the girl and to understand the wirlwind and the spirit, the rest doesnt matter so much and can be left blurred. Sadly i just have two early wip pics of it :

Finally it was time to paint my biggest fear, the spirit. As i said before it's very very fragile, because it's only made of resin leaves glued together. There is no armature in it. So on the first try when i wanted to basecoat it with the airbrush, it bent so hard that i was afraid it breaks. I had to stop and build an armature around it, so it supports the aibrush breeze and the upcoming brushstrokes.

Once done (as you can see on the pics) i could finish the priming and start adding colors. The first colors have been airbrushed and then the leaves have been painted 1 by 1 with the brush. Once again i had to be very careful with it to not press too hard while painting. Being extremely focused to not make a awkward movement was quite tiring.

After multiple hours, there is the final result :

In the end, it was the most interesting and difficult piece i ever had to paint. And also the first one to really scare me... Thanks again Patrick for your trust :) .

If you have any questions about the process, feel free to ask. Cheers!
